Early Inspirations Early in our careers, many of us wonder what kind of adults we’ll become. In my final year of school, my passion had for many years been in drawing, academics weren’t my strong suit. But I’ve learned that everyone’s path is different, and what truly matters is giving it your best effort. I came across an advertisement in the local paper for an apprentice electrician role. After completing a couple of hands-on tests and facing a rather intimidating interview with a Regional Director, I was offered the position.
The Power of Curiosity As children we dream of countless futures: fireman, astronaut, artist, scientist, teacher and with every story sparking new possibilities. Choosing a path isn’t about a profession, it’s about finding purpose and joy. I always encourage my grandchildren to dream boldly, trust in their instincts and abilities. Growing up is a journey, not a destination, shaped by continual growth, change and discovery.
Over the course of my career, I have held more than 15 diverse roles from electrician, telecoms, project & program management, sales executive, police constable, service manager, regional manager, business founder, and now an architect at Microsoft, each role was vastly different from the last and none of it followed a master plan. It was curiosity, courage, and a willingness to embrace every opportunity that guided me. Support from family and friends can unlock new paths and as our interests and ambitions evolve, so too can our direction. Changing course and gaining new experiences isn’t just normal, its invaluable. Yet these changes are bringing endless opportunities in AI, sustainability, and remote collaboration that are reshaping our industries and redefining what it means to have a career.
Lessons from a Non-Linear Career The advantage of a non-linear career is that it teaches resilience, adaptability, and the value of lifelong learning. Every role that I have held, whether in law enforcement, entrepreneurship, or tech has deepened my understanding of people, systems, and possibilities. These transitions weren’t always easy and often felt uncomfortable at first, but they were always enriching. The ability to pivot, learn from setbacks, and stay open to change has been my greatest asset. Success isn’t defined by climbing the corporate ladder or staying within a single organisation. It’s about crafting a rich mosaic of experiences that reflect your values, passions, and personal growth. Each opportunity is a stepping stone and often, the most unexpected paths lead to the most fulfilling destinations.
Advice for the Next Generation The question “What do we want to be when we grow up?” shouldn’t be just a one-time decision, but a question that’s continually reflected upon during your career. Your interests will evolve, your strengths will shift, and the world around you will continue to evolve.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
-
Stay curious: Curiosity fuels growth. ask questions, explore new fields, and never stop learning.
-
Be courageous: Trying something new can often be daunting, but courage opens doors that fear keeps closed.
-
Seek mentors: work colleagues or family friends, these people can help you see other hidden possibilities you hadn’t considered.
-
Value character over title: Who you are matters more than what you do. Integrity, kindness, and empathy will carry you much further than any job title.
My Take Aways
-
Embrace the journey, life needn’t be a straight line.
-
Say yes to new opportunities, even if they scare you senseless at the outset.
-
Build a toolkit of transferable skills for any future role.
-
Reflect often and realign, take time to assess and change course if needed.
